Geffen Records 1995’s Exit the Dragon, currently hailed as an overlooked 90’s classic, followed “Saturation” and their world-wide acclaim. The song and soundtrack became a platinum-selling worldwide hit. As the band was preparing to record its follow-up to Saturation, Quentin Tarantino picked the group’s cover of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” for the soundtrack to his unexpected hit Pulp Fiction. Produced by the Butcher Brothers (Cypress Hill), the album contained songs such as “Sister Havana”, “Positive Bleeding”, and “Back On Me”. Urge Overkill signed to Geffen Records in 1992- The band’s 1993 major-label debut, “Saturation”, was greeted with strong reviews upon its release. Urge Overkill is an actor, known for Pulp Fiction (1994), Kingpin (1996) and Flirting with Disaster. Urge hired Kramer to produce the 1992 Stull EP, which featured both “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” and the song “Goodbye to Guyville,” a kiss-off to the Chicago indie rock scene Liz Phair would later borrow the term for her acclaimed debut album, Exile in Guyville. Urge toured with Nirvana on the American and European “Nevermind” tour, and also hit the road extensively with Pearl Jam on the “Versus” tour, experiencing the 90’s in arena-style. Sister Havana, Tequila Sundae, and Positive Bleeding are fizzy, compact rock tunesthe kind of songs you imagine small-town teenagers swilling beer to as they cruise the main drag in cars borrowed from their parents. 1991’s “The SuperSonic Storybook” had the band re-uniting again with Steve Albini in Chicago. Urge Overkill’s major-label debut posited these three ragtag playboys from Chicago as a 90s iteration of Cheap Trick or The Cars. Urge Overkill has always explored a diversity of styles. The Butch Vig-produced “Americruiser” (1990) featured a sound and sense of style that inspired Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins to follow suit and use Butch for their subsequent releases, “Nevermind” included.

Corey Rusk, the founder of Touch and Go Records, championed the band as well, and the band’s first full length album, “Jesus Urge Superstar” was released on Touch and Go Records, with Steve Albini recording (and also housing the band in his basement). Steve Albini, a fellow Northwestern student, recorded their debut EP, Strange, I…on his own label, Ruthless Records. Urge Overkill is a reference from a Parliament song. Urge Overkill is comprised of two unique voices - a double singer-songwriter attack - Eddie “King” Roeser and Nash Kato- two Minnesota native sons who met at Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL, and began the band in Chicago. The SuperSonic Storybook and the Stull EP were both underground hits in the early ’90s. Their heavy pop machine style earned them a popular following on indie label Touch and Go records. Urge Overkill sports stylish outfits, sometimes are seen wearing matching medallions. Their latest release, Rock & Roll Submarine, is also critically acclaimed, earning 4 stars from Mojo Magazine, and delighting hungry fans worldwide. This year Urge Overkill has a lot to celebrate. We as UO are proud to represent a true music legend with this inaugural offering, from a record we've dedicated to another rock legend, Bobby Vee (who also passed later that year) in whose studio we recorded ‘Freedom’.Indie Rock Legends re-em-URGE! It is the 25th anniversary of the much loved hit album, Saturation, often heralded as one of the best albums of the ’90’s. Upon receiving the dreadful news of his premature departure in 2016, we felt compelled to include that track on the album.

'Naturally, our TM/chauffeur was tuned into some crazy station (and anything goes on Radio Free Europe?) whence we heard 'Freedom.' It sounded vaguely familiar, but instantly catchy? After returning home, we eventually found it online (the word 'freedom' our only clue) and were flabbergasted to discover it was indeed penned by George Michael?! We demoed the tune, then somehow shelved it, as we began writing what would become Oui. The music video features the band performing on a set decorated large yellow walls behind them. Oui features 11 new originals and a cover of Wham!'s 1984 hit, 'Freedom' which they turn into a typically riff-rocking Urge Overkill song. Nash Kato and Eddie 'King' Roeser's last UO album was 2011's very good Rock N' Roll Submarine, and that was their first album since 1995's Exit the Dragon. It's titled Oui and will be out January 28 via Omnivore Recordings. Chicago rock greats Urge Overkill have announced their first album in a decade.
